The Danish Poet

Let's begin the last part of our summer course with something very interesting. The Danish Poet is an awarded short animated film in 2006, it even won the Oscar in that category, so, it´s really good, you'll see.
Here's what you are going to do:
1. Watch the film (it takes aproximately 15 minutes)
2. Answer these questions on the blog:
A. Discuss the subtle techniques used in the film. Which elements had an emotional impact? (The
delicate music and the lilting accent of the narrator, for example, give the film a kind of Sweetness and sense of pending romance.)
How did the filmmaker, Torill Kove, prevent the story from being too sweet? (She adds regular dashes of wickedly funny detail, e.g., the perilously sliding bovine, the madly growing hair, the dog that gets kicked regularly, the eventual love affair between that dog and the neighbor dog, etc.)
B. Talk about the elements of truth in the film: summers in Norway are notoriously rainy; many
Danes, Swedes and Norwegians are somewhat confused about their national beginnings; Sigrid
Undset was a writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Do you believe that Undset was really a distant relative of the filmmaker? Or is this a device
to tell a wonderful story? Does it matter? This should lead to a discussion about poetic license
and fact vs. fiction, when writers and filmmakers create an entertaining story based on real events and people.
C. Did you like it? why?
3. Write your own story. (in the another entry)

a) I think the narrator makes a very good job by using a soft, and calm voice for the film also i love the music, because its very slow and also relaxing and yes, it really causes an emotional impact in the viewers. Also the story i don't think its that sweet because it has a lot of funny acts like the cow killing the farmer or the girl hair-dressing the woman, etc.
b) Well i think it can be a true story because nothing its out of its limits, its true that norway is rainy and also that Undset is a very good writer and very awarded.
c) I LOVE IT, because it shows the true love and how patience can achieve great things!!!

A. I think the music suits perfectly in the story, also the voice of the narrator and the way she tells the story is very understandable. What I liked is that the narrator tells the whole story and there are not other voices even if there are different characters. This story is obviously not that sweet, the dog that gets kicked by the man is really funny and also kind of mean.
B. Even the story is a little exaggerated about the hair and some other details, there is some truth in it; I think there are a lot of people that get married because of their parents’ decision even if they are in love with some other person just like the story.
C. I really liked it, its a usual story, I think it could be any people love story, and even in the sad moments there is something that makes you laugh like the part when they’re kissing because he is leaving and the priest suddenly takes the girl and drags her away from him. :D

a. I think all the elements that Torill Kove used are perfect. The music is extremely good and i particularly loved all the sounds. Like when he is walking extremely sad they put a piano remarking in low tones the sadness that the guy has. I liked but not too much the accent of the narrator. Sometimes i was confused on the names but it was also the best choice because you could tell that she was from another country. The filmmaker does an excellent job putting those funny scenes: like when the cow kills the neighbor and the dog's romance with the neighbor's dog!
b. Actually, i haven't been to Norway but I know that the sun doesn't go out that much. I believe that probably the director knew Undset but it wasn't a relative, and actually her character appears very little so he might have just invented that she invited the Danish poet. Of course filmmakers can do movies involving a poet's work, but they buy the right and change some details. They can't distortion it too much but can adapt some things that they want to put.
c.I really liked the story. It makes you think how a true love can develop or you start wondering how you met the person which you're with right now. It's a brilliant an unusual idea of making a normal love story into something extraordinarily meant to be.
